KYIV REGION AS AN IDP CONCENTRATION AREA: DEMOGRAPHIC IMPLICATIONS FOR LOCAL COMMUNITIES (THE CASE OF BUCHA DISTRICT)

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of demographic consequences of internally displaced persons (IDPs) concentration in Kyiv region, particularly in Bucha district. The study examines the scale of internal displacement as a result of full-scale Russian invasion, peculiarities of IDP settlement in suburban territories of the capital region and the impact of migration processes on the demographic structure of local communities. Special attention is paid to Bucha district as a typical example of suburban territory with high concentration of displaced persons. Changes in age structure of population, pressure on social infrastructure, labor and housing markets are analyzed. The results demonstrate that the influx of IDPs caused significant demographic shifts that will have long-term consequences for local community development. The charity initiative of the American businessman and philanthropist Dell Loy Hansen to provide free housing to internally displaced persons from Donetsk and Luhansk regions in the territory of Kyiv region is analyzed. Specific projects are described: "Hansen's Village" in the village of Tarasivka for IDPs from the East of Ukraine, a residential complex in the village of Sofiivska Borshchagivka, and " Wonder Town" in the village of Kolonshchyna as a specialized complex of individual houses for elderly IDPs. The article also highlights the investment project of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in partnership with American entrepreneur Dell Loy Hansen. aimed at the development of affordable housing in Ukraine as part of the Ladder to Prosperity program. Specific objects of the program in Sofiivska Borshchagivka, Tarasivka, Kolonshchyna, Pukhovka and Glevachy are given. The material highlights an example of international charitable assistance in solving the housing problem of internally displaced persons in Ukraine.
